Visit to ANDRITZ

On November 27 and 28, Dr. Heike Denecke-Arnold, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter Flachstahl, and Gerd Baresch, Managing Director of Technology at Salzgitter Flachstahl, visited the ANDRITZ plant in Erfurt. There, they were informed about the production of electrolysis components and gas separators (skids). Particular attention was paid to production processes, quality assurance measures, and the current project progress. The finished stacks will then be delivered to Salzgitter and installed in the future new electrolysis plant. They are the central components of the electrolysis plant, in which water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen by means of electric current.

Once commissioned, the plant will produce around 9,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, which will be used for the production of CO₂-reduced steel. The project thus marks the beginning of the industrial use of hydrogen within the framework of SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking and is an essential building block on the path to virtually CO₂-free steel production.

SALCOS® aims to achieve virtually CO₂-free steel production. The electrolysis plant is being supplied by ANDRITZ on an EPC basis. It uses HydrogenPro's pressure alkali electrolysis technology – currently one of the most efficient solutions for large-scale hydrogen production.

Gerd Baresch, Chief Technology Officer, Salzgitter Flachstahl: “The close, trusting cooperation with ANDRITZ is a key component for the success of our hydrogen project. Together, we are bringing innovative technologies into industrial application.”
