Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH introduces itself…

Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (SZMF) is the central research company and development and technology service provider for the Salzgitter Group.  The corporation resulted from the concentration of the research activities of the Mannesmann Forschungsinstitut (MFI) in Duisburg and the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH materials center in Salzgitter. With roughly 300 employees, it is one of the steel sector's leading European research institutes.

Both R&D sites develop new and optimized products. While the Salzgitter site focuses on material and process development for hot- and cold-rolled strip, the Duisburg site concentrates on seamless and welded tubes. Both sites also develop the accompanying coating and corrosion protection systems.

The actual development work in these areas is supplemented by  the determination and provision of material parameters, engineering  and concept studies, specific consultation  on component design in line with the materials,  component trials in corrosion, crash and endurance test stands, the development and delivery of non-destructive test engineering, and the evaluation of new solutions with regard to their ecological footprint in Life Cycle Assessments.

We use our comprehensive and ultra-modern equipment, which also includes all the common tools for numerical simulation, in close cooperation with our customers. Our OEM and supplier customers also appreciate the possibility to use selected systems, such as our 1000 metric ton tryout press for their own confidential test series. 

SZMF is integrated into the group’s Initiative Automotive network and acts in a cross-departmental function between the separate group companies, always with a focus on the end customer.
